It Has Come to This...

I don't blame any of you if you are sick of me posting about bathroom issues on this blog. Do you remember this previous post? You should be warned that this post will be about cleaning the bathroom. Clearly, with 3 boys...this post will not be for the faint of heart. I need to post this as a form of therapy for myself. (thanks, Jessica for teaching me how to link!)

I have been beside myself with how on earth to get the stench out of the boys' bathroom. Even after a thorough cleaning the smell would still linger. I couldn't figure out why I was unable to get the smell to disappear...it was not for lack of trying.

Finally, I unscrewed the entire lid and seat off of the top of the toilet and discovered this:

So...I put the entire seat and lid into the tub with hot water and straight bleach and soaked it for over an hour. Then, I drained the tub and let the lid and seat soak in hot, clear water. I wanted to get all of the bleach off of the seat, as not to burn anyone's flesh when they tried to use the bathroom. I left it there to soak and went on with my other cleaning.

About an hour later, Adam asked me if he could take a bath. I, of course, didn't put, "two and two together", as they say and I told him excitedly, "Sure!" I should have been suspicious when a 7 year old came to me asking me if he could take a bath of his own free will. So, a while later I went to replace the seat and lid on the toilet and discovered this...

Well, at least the seat, and lid are clean, and he added soap, right?

*sigh*

Hey, and while we are here, may I please point out my horribly outdated "Pepto-Bismol" pink bathroom tile? Since this tile has not been available since 1955 I prefer to think of it as "Vintage" rather than outdated. (Please, indulge me. Thank you.)

I am pleased to report that the bathroom smells 100% better. (at least.)

Adam (7 years and 6 months old at the time of the photo shoot.)

I can't even talk about boys bathrooms. Even Geoff is grossed out by the boy's bathroom -- and he is pretty gross himself!

We've decided that we just need to get a new toilet seat about every six months because of exactly your problem. (We're way too lazy to take it off and clean it!)

Great picture of Adam, though.

So, in answer to your question, tonight for the Oscars, I am wearing a little Vera Wang number with cap sleeves, (Clooney loves my fleshy arms...) and lots of jewels. (They are on loan from Tiffany, so I figured why not!)

If you see George before I do, tell him to meet me at the Governer's Ball after the awards show. (But tell him to keep his crappy political comments to a bare minimum - he knows it annoys me.)

I love your vintage tiles-tres chic!Boy pee is so much worse than girl pee. But, girls always forget to flush-at least mine does. We went to FL for a week and guess who forgot to flush before we left... You should just leave the seat off altogether!

Leaving the seat off IS a good idea!

Great toilet/tub picture.

Blech, I know your pain. I usually fill a squirt bottle with bleachy water, turn the nozzle to stream and squirt all up under there. Another gross place is under the tank where it rests on the toilet. Don't ask me how, but it gets on that underside too. I never go to the extra trouble of soaking or rinsing. They aren't going to get any bums burned. Obviously no body part is touching the toilet, it's too busy turned every way but aiming in the pot!

Boys are so gross.

PS It's true, girls don't flush.

Oh, that picture will give you ammo for years to come.

I found my twins playing with the toilet scrubber in the tub once. They were scrubbing the tub, of course!

That picture is priceless!

UGGGGGGGHHHHHHH. I dread when my baby boy starts going in the toilet. I still harbor nightmares of dealing with my brothers' pee-infested toilet seats.

And yep - my hubby had cancer in his late-20s. He has been cancer-free for seven years now!

Lauren,
Thank you so much for sending me the link to your blog! I love it! I have had so much fun reading your old posts and have been laughing out loud all eveing. And you have such a big network of fun friends. I am honored to be let in to your little group!

As for your toilet seat expereince- I rembmber moving out of one of our apartments and doing the typical cleaning check and making Mike clean the toilets. It was so easy for me to say "I know this is your fault, so you have to clean it!" because he was the only male in the house. Now he blames it on Andy.

Rightly so, he recently brought me to the bathroom, so proud (Andy, not Mike)to show me the neat design he had made on two of the four walls. Yep, he had discovered his spraying power. If only we had snow for him to write his name in....

I was so disgusted, but couldn't be angry because he had done it so innocently. Anyway, now I have two dribblers to wipe up after....

Oh my gosh, that is so funny! Good for you for getting a picture so you can prove it to him in years to come.
I'm glad I checked out your blog. The feeds aren't working with your blog and I have missed so many posts! AHH! Got to play catch up now.

Boys are gross. We are practicing target shooting in the bathroom, but it's not helping much (one of mine is easily distracting).

I'm teaching my third son to pee sitting down.

Totally vintage. As was, apparently, the biology growing around your toilet.

Great picture of Adam! Boys bathrooms are gross. Great idea to take the seat off, I never thought of it! Maybe I can get rid of that faint-pee-smell-no-matter-what-I-do thing now.

And thank goodness that thing was clean!!

Note to self: When you move into a "new-to-you" house, remove the toilet seats and scrub.

I didn't think to do that when we got into our house and now I wish I had. Ew, ew, ew.

Little boys are totally and completely disgusting in the bathroom. I have a friend who unscrews her toilet seats any time she cleans. Her name is April and hse has a post all about it on her blog. You should check it out.

I like your pink vintage tile. We used to have some pink vintage carpet in our old house. We didn't call it vintage though. We called it the pink puke.

Ugh. Don't even get me started on the pee on our toilet seats around here. Every time I go to sit down, I have to clean the seat. I have yelled, bribed, threatened, and punished. THEY JUST DON'T GET IT. Maybe I should make them go outside.

Love the picture. Blackmail him when he's older with it for sure.

Ha ha! That is great! Just wait till he gets married or gets a girlfriend and you know that picture is going to get pulled out!!!!!

I'm a huge fan of everything pepto-bismal pink! =)

I have green carpet in my bedroom that I've never been fond of. I'm now going to call it vintage (cause it REALLY is.) and feel all mucky muck! "Real nice brand new home...Do you have any vintage carpet? Oh, you don't....!"

That is awesome! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to convince their child to take a bath. I hear "but I just took one two days ago!" quite frequently. Stinky boys!
My daugther would love the tile in your bathroom. Pink is her favorite color.

Ha! I just found your blog. That is hilarious and totally something that I could see happening at my house. The best part is that you didn't freak out (like most moms would) and instead you ran and got the camera to take a picture. Gotta love it!

that ma'am is why, i NEVER go into the boys' bathroom... I know bad mom, but the oldest is 15, THEY CAN CLEAN THEMSELVES. ANd when it gets too bad... we bring in the professionals!

My Grandma's house is plastered in all things pink and turqoise. She remodeled it that way ON PURPOSE.

Love the pic! Print a hard copy of that. It'll come in handy one day...

Oh Lauren, I just about laughed so hard I peed my pants! You are the best Mom! Your boys have grown so much! I will have to remember that one about the toilet seat when Jack starts potty training.

Hey! I am glad you liked the paint in my house. Painting is a great and cheap way to update!

Yes, that is us at the temple when my son was 2. I love that picture... Kinda felt dumb asking a stranger to take a picture of our backsides, but it turned out great!

I'm with you on this one sister-and only two of my boys are even using the toilet. I've taken the whole seat off before too. But alas it needs to be done again. I also can't tell you how happy I am that I have a bathroom seperate from my boys. I get pretty territorial about them using our toilet.

Ok. I just gagged on the Cadbury Mini Eggs I was eating. Seriously, I did.

Hey the retro tile is totally in! I've tried to train my boys to sit - they're caught standin' or sprinklin' and they are cleaning!

Oh, I love this story--I laughed so hard! I can totally identify with the 3 boys, no matter how much you clean you can't get the smell out part. Never thought of taking the seat off and soaking it, I'll have to try that. I just figured I'd have to replace the whole toilet and the floor to get the smell out! :) The picture in the tub is classic!

i was just going back reading all of your hilarious posts. i think this one is one of my all time favorites. not just because of the brave picture you posted of the "slightly yellerd" toilet or the picture of adam in the tub with the seat around his head... but the VINTAGE tiles in the background. i think it is fab!!!!
