Well, firstly I would like to wish our Adam (center) a heartfelt congratulations on winning first place in the Wolves' division and second for the Pack at the Pinewood Derby for troop 538. Adam was so, so thrilled and worked really hard with Mike on his camouflage Virginia Tech race car. His car was a sight to behold and proved a force to be reckoned with...heh, heh, heh. Adam has watched patiently for the three years that Evan was a Cub Scout and was so excited to finally get his turn to race. When Mike and Adam were working on Adam's car, Evan sighed, "Ya know, it's not fair...it took Dad and I three years to figure out how to make a fast car and Adam is going to know all the tricks right away." You see, Evan's first car was an impressive looking shark car complete with intimidating dorsal fin. The shark car jumped the track several times...*ahem* not that anyone was counting...and lost a wheel several times, as well.
The truth is, my saying things like Adam's car was, "a sight to behold and proved to be a force to be reckoned with" is meant to be funny and totally, tongue-in-cheek. The reality is, I really struggle with aspects of the Pinewood Derby. Perhaps, it is because I can hardly stand it when I see a Cub Scout crying when his car loses or wrecks (especially, if I am pregnant). I have an understanding of the kind of work that goes into making a Pinewood Derby car and how hopeful the boys are, especially because it is something the boys do with their fathers. I know that not everyone can win and perhaps it the whole experience could be thought of as a good, "life lesson" but, for some reason I still struggle.Well, last year when Evan's car won and he got to go to continue on to the regional competition several of my blog friends asked me for tips on building a fast car. I have gleaned so many amazing tips from blog friends (recipes, fashion tips, movie reviews, book reviews, etc.) that I thought I would share what little we have learned.
Oh...you weren't serious about wanting tips...
Well...too late...
Tips From The Marshman Family Pinewood Derby Juggernaut:
Disclaimer: These tips are not foolproof. Cars have been known to beat ours without the following aspects in place. Phew...I feel better having posted a disclaimer...
Anyway...after Evan's shark car met its demise...repeatedly...*ahem* not that anyone was counting...Mike consulted our (now former) Bishop who is an engineer and gleaned the following tips.
Tip #1 from Bishop Horton:

Use the wedge cut. It is somehow more aerodynamic. Don't ask me...I only write the blog...I don't know why I say things most of the time...but, I do know the wedge cut works well.
Tip #2 from Bishop Horton:
Put all of your weight in the very back of the car. Mike uses fishing sinkers that he melts with a small blow torch (acetylene torch) and then pours into holes drilled in the back of the car. (If he adds too much weight to the car he drills a portion back out again.) We have seen all kinds of things used to make a car heavier. Just make sure the weight is in the back to help push the car along faster. (Do you like my artsy pictures of Adam's car shoved into the couch cushions?) Be careful not to make the car too heavy because you will be disqualified.
We always use my Weight Watchers scale to make sure our car isn't exceeding the weight limit.
At least that scale is getting some sort of use.
Tip #3 from Bishop Horton:
Put your wheels as far in the front and back of your car as possible. You will have to cut new slits with the band saw to reposition the wheels. Somehow, that makes the car go faster. It is important NOT to let the wheels extend further than the ends of the car. You will be disqualified if they do. (Sorry, this picture is lousy)

This cracks me up!!! This brought back so many memories of growing up with 4 older brothers. Years & Years of pinewood derbies.... It was actually my Mom that built it year after year! I never understood why so much intensity goes into it all... and with 3 girls, maybe I'll never understand... but it looks like fun! You guys must have the greatest time together. I'm sure there's never a dull moment with all that fun at your house! Love ya!
That is so awesome! I am so glad you shared those tips, as my first boy will be going into cub scouts in a couple of months! I know nothing about pinewood derby cars. I will definitely be referring back to this post.
Congrats to Adam, and I guess I should be glad my kids won't be competing against Brian in a couple of years! LOL. Fun stuff.
Congrats to the Marshman family on winning. Of course you have to paint the car Hokie colors...duh! And, how could you possibly be expected to use the weight watchers scale for anything else? You're pregnant! (Plus, didn't you just buy it for weighing cars in the first place?) ;)
This is very helpful. Our cars were so bad last year that I had to start making up awards...most colorful, most creative, most snail-like. Yea, it was that bad. I left halfway through the derby to run to the store to get more prizes because there were just too many losers that night.
Could you BE any more freakin' funny?? Why don't you come visit me?
With that, I must tell you, both of my boys have lost every pinewood derby we have ever participated in. We have been obliterated. I am NOT married to an engineer and we know NOTHING about all this crap. I wish I had known all of this before. Our last PD, Maris was at work and so I went wit Parker. Maris told me that it might be a little light, and that I should glue a quarter or two to it if it came in low. It came it really low. I tried to glue/tape $2.25 to it. It was sad, and ugly. I felt really bad for Parker. But I reminded him that he had won other things and it was someone else's dads, I mean child's turn to win. At least he didn't openly cry, and he got over i t quick. Amen.
Oh, a post on the Dadwood Derby. THe night when big men become little boys again. We are pathetic rejects at this. We have never won, never even placed; with three boys our odds should have been good. I guess when you are getting the hunk of wood out of the box on the way to the church and taping things on it on the way in to the church and fighting about how to put the wheels on in the church..., it doesn't quite lend itself to success does it?
Tell me why we do cub scouts again?
You. Are. Hilarious. I seriously need to bookmark this page when my so because of Pinewood Derby Age because my husband is an obsessive freak about winning!!!!!!
That is awesome Lauren. I seriously must bookmark this so in a couple years when my boys hit this stage of life I am totally set. Congrats to your family for reaching this pinnacle in life. What a status symbol the pinewood derby win is! ;)
Lauren, you really need to post more often. (No pressure. You just CRACK ME UP!) I love the part about you guys creating exciting stories about Brian when he is in the PWD. Your boys are lucky to have such a fun mom! And I'm afraid I'll cry at the PWD too. I'm such a baby like that.
Now I feel like I will be totally prepared in 8 years when my son gets to do the derby!
You are too cute my friend!!
aha! thanks so much! ours is coming up... we will be rpinting this article for use... (unless adam may have it in his heart to maybe just mail us his for a little while??)
Mark and I laughed heartily at this post.
Thanks for laughing at my jokes. I'm glad someone gets them :)
thanks for the tips. too bad no one in this house knows what a band saw is or how to melt a weight. unfortunately for jeff i've theatened legal action if my kid doesn't win
Thank you for the tips...we have had way too many Derby losers in our family.
Even though I have girls this age doesn't mean I don't know all things Derby. See I had three younger brothers who I was forced to go watch and support during the maddness. The oldest was the guinea pig just as you mentioned the second definitely benefitted from the schooled older bro. But it was the youngest who won the big time. Yes my mom still has the ginormous trophy.
I too cry at the poor loser cars and I hate to look at the boys whose cars were thrown together at the last minute because they either have an angel single mom or a dad who doesn't care.
I have a few years before I get the fortune/misfortune of being part of this tradition so for know I will keep my blow torch on stand by.
Dang. I read this post a day too late. The only ribbon we got yesterday was "sleekest snake" award. Oh well...
I will have to refer back to his post in a few years...
Jaxon is a *bit* competitive... I am sure the derby will be a big deal at our house!
When our 4th boy was born, my husband muttered...12 pinewood derby cars :) My husband always won "safest car" at the Pinewood Derby, so his only goal was to have his sons not come in dead last.
I needed this post 4 years ago!! My poor son came in last every year.
Congrats on your wins!
Hilarious! But also, exhausting. I didn't know how much work goes into these things. I'm pretty sure this will be a total "daddy/son" thing in our house when Carter gets old enough...
I'll just take pretty pictures of the car and scrapbook them. That's a good enough contribution, right?
You guys are so fun! I'll have to file those tips for our cub scout days... they're sneaking up on us, and I know we're going to have no clue what we're doing when the time comes!
You forgot the other tip of making sure your car is not THE fastest one. Otherwise you have to go to districts and spend a whole other Saturday doing PWD crap again.
Tell me you're getting a girl. Nobody should have to do that many years of PWD car races.
Do you know what makes me a horrible person? The fact that I'm dreading the days when my child is old enough for the pinewood derby! I hear about the stress, the competitiveness and I just want to run and hide. But I gotta say that you make it sound pretty fun. Maybe I'm looking forward to it after all.
I bet a car painted in Univ. of Oregon colors would beat the VT car...
Yeah, I'm talkin' smack.
You are such a crack up!!! Love you Marshmans! And really miss you guys. How are ya? How are you feeling?
Awesome tips! I go to pinewood derby mainly for the Twinkie Cars with oreo tires that our Ward always serves. I won't have those special treats again for another 4 years. Oh well.
Make them myself? You must be kidding.
Yes!! Pinewood Derby 2014 here we come! I hope I can remember the tips that long...Oh wait, who am I kidding? I can't even remember my birthday half the time (not that I'm really trying. Who needs to be reminded they are getting old?)
I'm glad you enjoyed Graham's sayings. He totally cracks me up. Gotta love kids.
Go Hokies!!
You know, the funny thing is that the one time we did "take it all" was when we finally DIDN'T paint it Hokie colors and have a VT on it somewhere. Maybe the colors are too close to Texas A & M and are therefore jinxed here in Houston. So funny. Great post. love you!
I'm gonna have to bookmark this one. We have three boys as well, and I'm not at all looking forward to the years of Scouting ahead of us.
Did I just admit that in public?
