I Got a Lovely Walk Down Memory Lane Out of It...

My poor sister Stephanie is a retired 5th grade teacher...

She retired, to give birth to and rear these scrumptious fellas...

but, having those delicious boys certainly isn't why I feel sorry for her.

You see, because she is a retired 5th grade teacher...

whenever I don't like a school project that my kids have to embark upon creating

I call and practically scold Stephanie about it...

like it is somehow her fault.

Stephanie, I would like to publicly apologize to you for scolding you about

Evan's latest school project...

I believe I called his project, "cuckoo bonga" and "cracka lacka" and said in
an accusing tone to her...

"You know what drives me to distraction? Do you know what makes
me froth at the mouth? Do you know what practically drives me to drink, and as a Mormon woman I have to adhere to rules that forbid that sort of thing?"

If I remember correctly, she calmly replied, "Do, tell?"

To which I continued, my passionate diatribe...

"I despise school projects that make the parents do more work than

the student!"

You see, Evan had to make a scrapbook chronicling his entire

Kindergarten through 5th grade experiences.

I declared a passionately worded epiphany (to Stephanie, not poor Evan) about

how I was going to have to dig through boxes,

pillage negatives, search through archives and digital photography

for this blasted project.

For the entire week if I talked to Mike on the phone

while he was at work I would snort, and huff,

"Asher and I are working on our 5th grade

project...Asher is scanning the originals as

we speak."

Okay, so I exaggerated...but, I though it added to

the overall drama of my plight to say that the 18month

old that I babysit was being forced to immerse himself in my

meaningful work...

Here is where I publicly thank my fabulous Sister-in-Law, Amy

for helping me organize my

pictures those years ago...So that I can

scrapbook them all...

I am a years behind in my scrapbooking...but someday, I will

scrapbook them...(I say, as I pound my fist on the computer desk with conviction)

Perhaps, that is why I got so irritated with this little school project...

because when I look at all of my un-scrapbooked

photos...it makes me want to cry...

And reminds me why Mike jokes that I am more

of a, "collector" than a "scrapbooker"...in reference to all of my

scrapbooking gear and lack of finished pages.

Amy, if it weren't for your help

this project would have been even

more painful than it already was...

But, you know what...

*sniff*, *sniff*

As much as I complained about

this project...

*sniff*

I am grateful it was assigned because

*sniff*

I fell even more deeply in love

with my Evan.

So, I take it all back...'cause I got to unearth some of these...

Here he is learning how to ice skate...He said, "This is the greatest day of my life!"

Who knew falling on an unforgiving surface like a cold slab of ice could be so life altering?

The rink gave the boys used pickle barrels to push around the ice to get used to skating. Adam looks so tiny ... *sniff*...

No Easter Basket is complete without a new Virginia Tech poster for your room.

Fun with adorable cousins...my brother John and the aforementioned fabulous Amy's kiddos...everyone looks so young!

So, thank you to *sniff*, Evan's wonderful

5th grade teacher, Mrs. Sharon Meaders

for assigning this *sniff* fantastic project

*sniff*

So, uh, sorry Stephanie for being such a whiner...

here is a little picture I dug up that can cheer you up...

*

*
I think it is so adorable...

I hear you - those projects drive me bananas! they know I work right?!

but yes, always falling in love with them again, and again, and...

Cutie boys!!! My kids do their own projects and they usually don't get a great grade-thats what ticks me off. Sure if I did it, they would get A+++ but no way-it's their project! I think the project should clearly state whether parents are allowed to help or not!

I'm a collector too. I've done much more meaningful family history journaling since I've had my blog than I ever did while spending hundreds on scrapbooking supplies. Yeah for blogging!

I hate the pressure that kids school projects put on me too. I could let them do it themselves, but I can't stomach the idea of the total crap that they would turn in if I allowed that.

I love memory lane!

School projects--oh I just can't wait! (j/k)

I dread the days when mom projects get assigned! Let my kids stay young forever for yet another reason.
BUT--what great pictures! I'm so glad you shared. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing the agony of scanning (ha ha). =) Fun, isn't it?

Okay, "scrumptious" is a perfect word to describe those twins.

I am laughing at your post. I've always felt May is the month of "parent" I mean "children" projects in school. I am glad it turned out to be meaningful in the end.

Don't feel guilty about not scrapbooking everything. You are a great mom going about doing many good things.

P.S. That Evan pretty "scrumptious" himself.

Those little fellas are downright edible. I might want two more if they could look like those guys. ( And just sit there silent with gummy grins, like their picture.)

And the walk down memory lane was great, and your son is just as scrumptious, but now I am ticked at your sister and all her colleagues the world over too. Argh! School projects!! Bwah! Wait until she has to do her's in duplicate!

Ashlee said...

Honestly...what teacher in their right mind would ask a kid/parent to do a project like that? They HAVE to know the parent will be doing it. Sigh. I would be annoyed. But I love the pictures. :0) Cute kids!

Oh those twin babies are taking me down memory lane! Delicious!

You are toooooo funny! And I loooooooove the chub pictures. And evidently the letter oooooooooo because I use it a lot.

I love this post... I just wrote about my distaste for "MOMMY PROJECTS" too! Good stuff...and I love that some good came of it.

I hate those projects too... because I am neither a collector or a scrapbooker... they always leave me feeling very inadequate...

First, I can't believe that you are only a year behind on scrapbooks and I am ever so impressed!

Second, I too dislike many of the school projects that require me to do homework. I have a college degree, I've done homework before!

And third, yes! Stephenie Meyer wrote the Twilight series that I got sucked into, which is why I tried so hard to steer clear of The Host! Jared is my new love, so far!

Those babies are just yummy. And yours are extremely handsome as well.
As far as projects and homework in general is concerned, I've started following the guideline of "it's their homework, not mine" and so my kid has turned in stuff that often makes me cringe. They have "show and tell" every month where they are supposed to do this big presentation about an issue - I let my kid run it all himself. I've seen what the other kids do and well... their parents do it. When I went in for a parent/teacher conference I told her that everything he turned in would be 100% his work and that she'd need to grade accordingly. I just needed to let the "pretty" go with everything I had on my plate. She agreed and I haven't seen him penalized. As of yet - he doesn't know the difference either. I'm sure my daughter won't play along as well since she's anal and knows when it's pretty and when it isn't and will insist on my help. We'll see.

I'm glad you have a teacher to vent to - it's necessary.

Those twins are too precious! So far I haven't had to do any of those dreaded projects but I know they are just around the corner.

Your Evan is a cutie and how could you not go all out for his project!?

ashli said...

i too just finished a project similiar to that for my 2nd grader. definitly a project for the mom rather than the kiddo, but i guess it forces us to gather some kind of history together....especially because i am also like you in that i am a collector rather than a scrapbooker. ahhh the joys these kids bring to our lives. hoping the walk was nice and that he appreciates your hard work.

Tristan said...

Oh I am so not looking forward to school projects! Maddie had a talk in primary last Sunday and that was stressful enough!

The twin baby boys are so chubby and adorable!!! I love them!

Okay, Stephanie's babies are adorable. That one boy (sorry, don't remember names) totally has the Schwartz jowels going for him! I love them!

Yeah, I just finished my third grade science fair project. I'm not even ashamed anymore to admit that I do it. I've tapered off with the Jr. high kid, but when they are in High School, I will have to do their projects in cognito.... Anyway, I'm hoping to get a good grade on my science project -- I worked pretty hard on it.

Those boys are the cutest chubby babies!!

My twins were skinny winnies...:(

I love how you were thanking his teacher in the end.

I certainly wasn't after Ryan did 90% of Emma's impossible electricity project. She DID color the poster, but I really thinked that taught her ZERO about electrical currents.

What do the kids with the deadbeat parents do?

Christie said...

I must be the only mom on planet earth that likes those kinds of projects. I MAKE my kids do more. I so should have been a teacher.

Jaime said...

While I love the blog your excessive use of the return bar is killing me!

Ilene said...

I DREAD science project time. I don't wanna do them. I will write a note for my kids so I don't have to deal with them.

Or I will give them the okay to get something off the internet. I refuse to be sucked into those pointless projects again.

I'll keep whining because there is nothing sentimental about a science project.

You deserve a round of applause! That is hard work but, worth it. Good job! I love looking at past photos, they grow up too fast.

to answer you, better late than never, no, i don't find what you said weird.

Amy said...

sorry, i couldn't get past the first picture
how cute are they?

Hollyween said...

Those chubby babies. SO CUTE!!!

And I still hate stupid busy work parent projects... even if you did get something out of it. You gotta admit that they're still annoying.

But your gratitude is humbling. Perhaps it's time for me to exercise some. I should since I have a long road ahead of me of 'projects'. Levi is only in kindergarten (for another week anyway) afterall.

My oldest is only in second grade, and I'm already fed up with homework!!! I can't imagine ten more grades of this... Plus, I'm worried that one day she might need my help with a paper or something, and since it's been so long since I've been in school she'll be way smarter than me so I won't be able to help!!! :)

Lauren, you are my blogger hero! Every post is witty, enlightening, and just fun to read. Your little nephews are ADORABLE (mary lou whittier said they look a little like my Alex) and Evan looks so YOUNG, I'm sure that little trip down memory lane is worth all the trouble. That's why you have not scrapbooked it all yet, because you need to have those chances to go back and look and remember and love. Who needs a finished scrapbook anyway right? SO OVERRATED!

Amy said...

um, glad i could help? i lov epulling out the o9ld photos! your boys are so beautiful! I love you!!!

My son is in Tiny Tots. He's been chosen as student of the week which pretty much means I have to come up with a list of 10 things about him. Because if you ask him what he likes, he'll say grilled cheese sandwiches for every single question.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN ;)

Your boys are super super cute!!!!!!!!!

Bridget said...

I SO do not like project that are hard for moms too. I am not the kind of mom who does science fair projects for my kids and then have them put their name on it. Maren does the project herself, even if it means the writing is uneven and artwork is home made.

This is a great post. It's like church callings, sometimes they totally bug and then the tears start to well up and we can't handle our gratitude - which also sometimes bugs!! :)

Can I just say, those twins are YUMMY!! Their fat rolls are toooo cute!

Melissa said...

oh gosh her boys are cute! My mom always made us do our own... well untill we put it off til the night before and then she would have to help us so we could actually turn it in... she always got mad at that :)
