Status Report

I have been feeling a little lousy lately (but hey, at least I get a baby out of it, right? ☺). The other day Brian asked me in dismay,

"Mom, why are you always just laying all over the house?" It made me laugh because it sounded as though he had found me face down by the back door, or something. I explained that I was okay...just that the baby brother or sister was growing and it made me feel sick, sometimes.

We looked up pictures on the Internet at what the baby looks like at certain stages of gestation. They boys' reactions were rather humorous and a little unsettling as well. At about the 9 weeks gestation mark I pulled up a picture and Brian gasped and said, "That, is your baby?" The look of shock on his face seemed to accuse me of trying to pull a fast one on him, because he had never seen a baby look like, that. Evan glanced and nonchalantly said, "Mom, the baby looks like a lizard." Then, Adam shrieked and yelled, "What is THAT?" in reference to seeing the umbilical cord. I assured my boys that it is completely normal for a baby to look like...well, a lizard, if you will, that early on in the pregnancy.

They seem suspicious that I may be mistaken.

Evan told me flatly that even if this baby is a girl, he and his brothers will do everything in their power to make sure she is a tomboy. He said, "We won't have any kind of princess stuff or Barbies around here...we are going to make sure she is tough!" At one point we had the following conversation:

Evan: "Mom, I'm serious...even if it is a girl we won't let her be a 'girly' girl."

Me: "We'll see..."

Evan: "What was that name you said you might name her if she is a girl?

Me: "Uh, Cara?"

Evan: "No."

Me: "Um, Robin?"

Evan: "No...the name I really didn't like at all..."

Me: "Ohhh, you didn't like the name Allison..."

Evan: "Yeah, Allison. Mom, if you have a girl and you name her Allison, I am going to call her, Al."

You see what I am dealing with here, people?

Unfortunately,I laughed at Evan's saying he would call a baby girl, "Al". I need to try not to encourage the child. I should have simply said, "Go 'way kid, you bother me." but, he catches me off guard with his humor. I must confess, I love that about him.

So...there you have it. Life is good.

And I promise that even though I don't feel very well...I have never been found face down by the back door.

I love that they are so concerened that if they have a little sister she can't be a "girly girl." Good luck with feeling better soon! Ask your doctor about B-6 and Unisom if he hasn't told you about them already. It did wonders for me. :)

AL!?!

That is hilarious!

When I was pregnant, I used to gag a lot. Jaxon kept telling me I sounded like a duck.

I would laugh, then gag again. :)

FUNNY!!

It is sooo hard to be pregnant with older kids to care for. So hard.

I will tell you (to pass along to your boys) we got the best of both worlds...a tough, sporty girl that loves princesses. They'll come around.

And, no, you did not scare me!!! You kissing Lizzie's cheeks would mean that we actually got to hang out. In person. Real life. Novel idea, no?

My name is Andrea said...

Ya, sure. Whatever. I think that my kids might like the idea of having a lizard instead of a sibling...

My daughter is a tomboy. It's easier to deal with that way. :o) But she still loves to play with babies and has even roped the boys into playing "house" and "school" and "restaurant" with her...I do cringe though, that she prefers basketball shorts over skirts...I would love it if she would dress like a girlie girl. But she is an awesome basketball and softball player! Dance, not so much! Sometimes she is such a girl and sometimes tough as nails. Best of both worlds, I say!

That little lizard is gonna be one lucky kid...

I like it when kids think their opinion matters. Quaint. And face down by the back door is fine if it makes you feel better.

I know you'll love it just the same if it is a boy, but I hope for your sanity... it's a girl.

I personally like Alyson (spelled this way of course) The cartoon cracked me up! Jeff will tell you that is totally how I am when I'm preggies.

Oh you are so funny! Can't you write more so I can have a good laugh everyday?!

Al--that's great. I love hearing about their reactions to what the baby currently looks like.
First trimester is always so no fun. I hope you get to the end of the yucks soon! I just got out of second trimester and I'm tired all the time again. Why can't we just all be in the second trimester for the whole nine months???

I am still so excited for you! I'm sorry you're feeling yucky, but it sounds like the boys are taking "good" care of you. I love you lots!

The next time I'm pregnant, I'm totally blowing up that cartoon to poster size and hanging it on my front door.

Al--- I love it!!! they are great kids and even when you don't want to laugh you just can't help it. I was laughing so hard at this conversation!!!

Al, That's what I call my friend Allison! That is so funny. Are you sicker with this baby than the others? Being pregnant gives you the RIGHT to lay down ALL day!!!

The other day we were sorting DVDs and I found my maternity work out DVD. It made me laugh. I got it during my first pregnancy. When I thought I should still exercise through pregnancy. Luckily I wised up after a month of using it and embraced the couch and ice cream route. Haven't used it since.

Hey-as far as I'm concerned, you could be laying by that door ebcause they way I see it--3 boys at home and PG, you win the lay around rights!

I tell my kids that they can have say about names as soon as they feel as crappy as I do.

"al"!! haha! i love it! if this one is a girl, she is bound to be tough with brothers like that! but they will definitely protect her! no boy will mess with her!

hang in there! the baby is a wonderful reward for all that we go through to get them here! i hope they appreciate all we do!!

Your boys are so hilarious..."a lizard"...seriously. Oh I hope you have a girl and they call her "Al" thay would be so cute!

LOVE the cartoon.

If I'd left the naming up to my boys, Pete would be "Sophia."

Your boys are too funny!! I am sorry you have been feeling sick! Hey, I know how ya feel exactly!! Hang in there! I hope you start feeling better soon.

I call my best friend Alexia Al. It suits her just fine. And she dresses cute and wears makeup.

I'm glad to hear that you are laying all over the house. My daughter is tough but she does like fashion. You can have it both ways.

Hey, I'm all for boys' names used for girls. :)

I think it's so funny that your boys want her to be a tomboy. My boys were the opposite, insisting on everything being pink and flowery. Then again, they do wrestle with her, as if she were just as tough as them...

Hang in there, hopefully the sick part will be over soon!

I love the way you write everything down. You are fabulous! I am sorry you are feeling bad though. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you!!!

I'm happy to hear of your laying all over the house. Keep up the good work.

That is SO funny! Since I had a girl first and then all of my boys, I have pics of every single one of my boys dressed up in pink tutus and dresses :)

Are you going to find out what you are having?

mary said...

Just wait. If it is a girl, those boys will be having tea party's and catering to her every need, don't let 'em fool ya (speaking as a mom of boys who did NOT want a sister). If it's a boy, it'll be so cute to have 4 little guys! Either way, you get some new little cheeks to nibble on!

Great cartoon! Fetus pictures are a little frightening, you gotta admit. It's funny they think they can weigh in on the name. Whenever my kids think they get to vote on something, I remind them that they can let THEIR kids vote but that's not something we do here. :)

Sounds like everything is under control. And I just have to say, I put Macy in dresses and then she's off to play with the trucks and balls. So, we have the best of both worlds I suppose with girly and boyish...

Christie said...

At least you can sing her the Paul Simon song, "You can call me Al, call me Al..."

Still laughing at your adorable boys.

Christie said...

P.S. You must remind them of this when you catch them playing with her polly pockets. Which you will.

Al is an adorable name for a girl. I tell my kids to go away all the time and I'm not even pregnant. You're a good mom!

I've never thought of lizard before. Alien has come to mind, though, like I'm breeding something horrifying. Good thing they get much cuter. Congratulations! I hope the barfy times are short!

Ah, wouldn't it be nice if the stork could just deliver our babies to us in full-health & minus out the 9 months & 6 weeks of Post?

My sister-in-law had 3 boys & then had a girl the same age as my Annelise. Her daughter is so much "tougher" than my girly girl who cries even at the thought of being teased.

I wonder the same thing if we were to have the opposite on the 4th too. Either way, I think after having 3 of the same gender, as parents we'd be starved & want to raise them as either a tough boy or girly girl... even if the siblings think otherwise. :)

Jenibelle said...

When do we find out boy/girl? So then we can give you encouragement either way. Love Cara by the way!!!

Colin & Lori said...

Congrats!!! This is very exciting. Sorry you don't feel well. I am glad your boys are concerned about how you feel. Take advantage of that and get them to do things for you. You deserve it!!!

Ugh, when you mentioned how you were feeling, it brought back a flood of memories. My first trimester was THE WORST. I could take the throwing up but the exhaustion about did me in.

Then again, I didn't have your boys around to entertain me. :-)

Popsicles. And yes, I used 4 pregnancy tests each for my last two - since I bought them at the dollar store.

I have a tiny plastic 13 week fetus. It fits neatly in the palm of a child's hand. At 13 weeks in my pregnancy I brought it out to show my scientifically minded kids. One took a a look at it, then inspected my already blossoming belly (and let's face it, people ask a non-pregnant me if I know what I'm having yet - a. yes, a three year old) and he has the gall to say pointing from my stomach to the tiny fetus, "So, you have ALL THAT, from that?"
